A huge boom heard in the SE side of Pueblo with no explanation yet

By Jenny Paulson – Pueblo residents residents in SE Pueblo reported hearing a loud boom Wednesday at about noon that shook homes and rattled nerves, but the cause is unclear.

More then several dozen people responded that they’d heard the loud noise too, on Pueblo’s popular Pueblo Crime Alerts page, and my own personal page.

One Facebook user commented, “Felt like it dropped on my house, very loud, shook entire house, felt it in the ground. Sounded like a bomb and a big one.”

A woman who lives on Sante Fe, “It scared the #%^$ out of me!! It sounded and felt like something landed on top of the building!!”

Locals have been trying to figure out what it was through social media this afternoon – it was reported by numerous people throughout facebook, heard on the east side down (near Portland & 12th) down to the lower east side (Portland & Joplin and Stockyard Rd).

Someone reported that there were jets flying around about 5-6 of them from 8am to about 1pm, but they aren’t believed to be able to make the type of “boom” sound locals are reporting.
“The C-17s have been flying around a lot but those cannot make any booms (especially sonic booms),” said Dan Wall, who manages the group.

Another citizen reported on facebook, “I live right across the highway behind sonic and it shook my windows. Very loud.” And another said: I’m at unmentionables right by the steel mill. I heard and felt it. It literally felt like something landed on top of the building!”

But thus far no one of facebook has figured out what the “boom” really is. One possibility is that it could be from a local gravel pit.
Other loud noises have been heard, mostly at night in Pueblo West and the North Side and are believed to be unrelated to today’s “boom.” Flares and other training materials from Fort Carson have been reported, especially at night. Some have taken photographs of flares and locals say sometimes their homes shake.

Wall posted a list of other “booms” reported in Pueblo including the following:

Wednesday, October 11th ~ 12:05 pm
– Thursday, September 21st ~ 7:45 am
– Wednesday, September 13th ~ 7:50 pm
– probably more in this gap…
– Wednesday, March 1st, ~ 4:55 pm
