The Bomb Squad was called to a house at the 1100 block of Evans and Mesa last night and police successfully recovered a pipe bomb photographed here that is said to “have blown up.”
Carol Sais responded to a post on the Pueblo Scanner Alert
facebook page saying this happened at her house and provided pictures of an officer holding it. She says she thinks someone probably was targeting her family.
“My son thought it was a fireworks,” she said. “Like a m80, but when I saw it yesterday, well we were cleaning outside, I told my son it looked like a pipe bomb like on tv.”
There has been a handful of “bomb alerts” in the past month where locals have seen the Bomb Squad, which proved to be false alarms but this one appears to have been a sort of handmade pipe bomb.
Members of the Sais family were victims of a drive by shooting several years ago when they lived on the north side, believed to be gang related.
A “pipe bomb” is an improvised explosive device, which uses a tightly sealed section of pipe filled with an explosive mixtures of materials such as gunpowder, match heads, chlorate mixtures. The containment provided by the pipe means that simple low explosives can be used to produce a large explosion and the fragmentation of the pipe itself creates a potentially lethal shrapnel.
Police are continuing to investigate this pipe bombing case, and may be fingerprinting for evidence, to see who did this. If you have any information please call the Pueblo Police Department.
